Delaying Isha Prayer
Question: Is delaying isha prayer from the sunnah
Summary:
The importance of praying on time is clearly established in both the Qur’an and the Sunnah. Allah has obligated the believers to perform prayers at their appointed times, and the Prophet ﷺ named it among the most beloved deeds to Allah. While it is permissible to delay the ‘Isha prayer within its time frame especially when there is a need, the ideal and preferred practice is to pray it on time.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may Peace and Blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
From the Qur'an:
- Surah An-Nisa, Ayah 103
Allah said: "Indeed, performing prayers is a duty on the believers at the appointed times."
From the Sunnah:
- Al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr lil-Ṭabarānī 9802Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported:
I said, “O Messenger of Allah, which deeds are best?” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Prayer on time.”
The prayer should always be performed on time. Some of the hypocrites used to delay the Isha prayer, which is why the Prophet ﷺ said: **"No prayer is heavier upon the hypocrites than the Fajr and the Isha' prayers. And if they knew what is in them (in reward), they would have attended them, even if (it was) crawling."
From the Qur'an:
- Surah An-Nisa, Ayah 142
Allah says: "Surely the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He outwits them. When they stand up for prayer, they do it half-heartedly only to be seen by people hardly remembering Allah at all."
There is no problem in delaying `Isha as long as it remains within its allotted time. The Imam may delay the prayer according to the situation and agreement of the people so that it is not difficult for them.
From the Sunnah:
- Jami at-Tirmidhi 167Abu Hurairah narrated that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said:
"If it were not that it would be a hardship on my Ummah, then I would have ordered you to delay Isha until the third of the night, or its half."
It is permissible to delay `Isha, but it is better to pray it on time, as emphasized in the hadith above.
And Allah knows best.
