How Can a Person Build a Strong Relationship With the Qur’an and Be Among the People of Allah

Question: how can a person develop a relationship with the quran and become from the special people of Allah

Summary:

A strong relationship with the Qur’an is built by believing that it is the Speech of Allah, maintaining constant recitation, reflecting upon it, acting upon it outwardly and inwardly, teaching it, and calling others to it. Whoever adheres to this is among the people of Allah and His chosen servants, as indicated by the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the understanding of the righteous predecessors.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may Peace and Blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)

First, Evidence From the Qur’an

Allah the Exalted said:

From the Qur'an:

  • Surah Sad 29
˹This is˺ a blessed Book which We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ so that they may contemplate its verses,

He clarified that the purpose of revealing the Qur’an is reflection and action, not mere recitation.

Allah also said:

From the Qur'an:

  • Surah Al-Isra 9
Surely this Quran guides to what is most upright,

Whoever takes it as a guide in his life will have uprightness in his heart and actions.

Second, Evidence From the Sunnah

From the Sunnah:

  • Sunan Ibn Mājah: 215, graded Sahihnarrated that Anas bin Malik said:
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Allah has His own people among mankind.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, who are they?' He said: 'The people of the Qur'an, the people of Allah and those who are closest to Him.'"

From the Sunnah:

  • Sahih Muslim 804Abu Umama said he heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) say:
Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It.

From the Sunnah:

  • Sahih Bukhari 5027Narrated `Uthman:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."

Third, How the Salaf Built Their Relationship With the Qur’an The righteous predecessors viewed the Qur’an as the life of hearts, not a book of mere recitation.

From the Salaf:

  • ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
If your hearts were pure, they would never have enough of the Speech of Allah.

From the Salaf:

  • Ibn Masʿūd, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
The carrier of the Qur’an should be known by his night when people sleep, by his day when people eat, and by his sadness when people rejoice.

They would not move beyond ten verses until they learned what was in them of knowledge and action.

Fourth, Practical Means to Build a Strong Relationship With the Qur’an Sincerity, intending the Face of Allah, not reputation or habit. Consistency, daily recitation even if little, for the most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently. Reflection, reciting with deliberation, understanding meanings, and pausing at impactful verses. Action, implementing the commands of the Qur’an and avoiding its prohibitions, for the Qur’an is either a proof for you or against you. Night prayer, standing with the Qur’an at night is among the greatest means of reviving the heart. Adopting its character, as the character of the Prophet ﷺ was the Qur’an. Fifth, Statements of the Salaf Regarding the People of the Qur’an

From the Salaf:

  • Al Hasan al Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
The Qur’an was revealed to be acted upon, but people took its recitation as the action.

From the Salaf:

  • Sufyān al Thawrī, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
The Qur’an was given to be acted upon, so they took acting upon it as its recitation.

Whoever wishes to be among the people of Allah and His special servants must adhere to the Qur’an through recitation, reflection, action, and teaching, with sincerity and truthfulness. To the extent that the Qur’an is present in the heart and actions, the rank of the servant with Allah the Exalted will be.

And Allah knows best.
