Can a Person Stop or Combine Prayers Due to Severe Depression?

Question: I suffer from severe depression, and I have reached a stage where I feel that prayer causes me suicidal thoughts, and supplication brings me panic attacks. I do not say this out of belittling the religion, but because of the intensity of distress and psychological pain that I am in. Is it permissible for me in this situation to temporarily stop performing the prayer, or at least is it permissible for me to combine the prayers, such as combining them at the time of ʿAṣr or Maghrib, due to this severe psychological condition? Please advise, may Allah bless you.

Summary:

Necessary clarification before the answer What the questioner mentioned is a severe trial, and it does not indicate weakness of faith or belittling the religion. Rather, it is illness and a test, and its bearer is rewarded for patience. It is not permissible in any circumstance that this pain be used to push a servant to abandon the greatest pillar of the religion after the two testimonies, for that is from the plots and deception of Shayṭān. It is not permissible in Islamic law to abandon the prayer under any circumstance as long as the mind is present, and it is not permissible to combine the prayers merely due to depression or intrusive thoughts. Rather, the prayer must be performed in its time according to one’s ability, even in the lightest possible manner, because abandoning it increases the trial and does not remove it, and it is a door that Shayṭān desires in order to cut the servant off from the greatest means of healing.

Answer:

First, prayer does not fall except with loss of intellect

Allah the Most High said

From the Qur'an:

  • 2:238
    Observe the ˹five obligatory˺

    And He said,

From the Qur'an:

  • 4:103
Indeed, performing prayers is a duty on the believers at the appointed times.

The scholars have agreed that prayer does not fall from the legally responsible person as long as his intellect remains, even in the most severe conditions. The sick person prays according to his condition. The one in fear prays the prayer of fear. The one unable prays sitting or lying down.

From the Scholars:

  • Ibn Qudāmah, may Allah have mercy on him, said,
Prayer does not fall in any circumstance from the legally responsible person as long as his intellect remains.

Second, it is not permissible to leave prayer due to intrusive thoughts or depression Compulsive thoughts, panic, and aversion to worship are from the deception of Shayṭān if they lead to abandoning prayer. Allah the Most High said,

From the Qur'an:

  • 3:175
That ˹warning˺ was only ˹from˺ Satan, trying to prompt you to fear his followers.

From the Sunnah:

  • Musnad Aḥmad 15958Hāshim ibn. al-Qāsim
"I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'the Shaitan sits in the paths of the son of Adam.

One of the greatest things Shayṭān desires is to convince the servant that abandoning prayer is relief, while in reality it is an increase in illness and a cutting off from the cure.

Third, is it permissible to combine prayers due to depression It is not established from the Prophet ﷺ, nor from the Companions, nor from any of the Salaf, that depression or psychological distress is a reason for combining prayers. The legislated reasons for combining are known, such as travel and illness that makes performing each prayer in its time physically difficult. As for psychological distress and intrusive thoughts, they do not permit combining, because opening this door leads to abandoning prayer entirely, and this is what Shayṭān desires.

Fourth, how should the one afflicted with depression pray The legislation is merciful and does not burden beyond capacity. He prays with the shortest recitation. He prays only the obligatory prayers if more is difficult. If he cannot stand, he prays sitting. If he cannot attain khushūʿ, he prays even without khushūʿ, because khushūʿ is completion, and performing the prayer itself is the foundation. Some of the Salaf said, Prayer with heedlessness is better than abandoning it.

Fifth, prayer is not the cause of illness but the cause of salvation Allah the Most High said,

From the Qur'an:

  • 2:45
And seek help through patience and prayer.

Some of the Salaf said, When my chest became tight, I turned to prayer. Shayṭān reverses realities, making the cure appear as illness, and making separation appear as relief, and this is from his most dangerous plots.

Sixth, what is required from the afflicted person Maintaining the prayer even in its minimal form. Not surrendering to the idea that prayer is the cause of harm. Seeking permissible psychological treatment, for seeking treatment does not contradict reliance upon Allah. Increasing in saying, O Allah, I hope for Your mercy, so do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye.

Final Legal Conclusion It is not permissible to abandon prayer, and it is not permissible to combine it for this reason. What occurs to you of aversion and thoughts is a trial and whispering, and prayer is the protection, not the obstacle. Holding firmly to it, even with pain, is salvation by the permission of Allah, and abandoning it is a door to destruction and increase of trial. We ask Allah to make your heart firm, to grant you swift healing, and to make what has afflicted you a raising in rank and an expiation of sins.

And Allah knows best.
