How to Overcome Distraction and Weak Focus in Prayer
Question: As-salāmu ʿalaykum. In every prayer I perform, doubts come to me about whether I have said something correctly, or I become confused about which rakʿah I am in, or even whether I have said the final supplications and taslīm or not. I often doze off or drift into imagination. I cannot maintain dhikr for a long time without feeling bored or sleepy. Sometimes five minutes pass and I realize I was daydreaming the whole time. Even when I ignore the whispers, my prayer is without khushūʿ and feels lifeless. I finish the prayer not knowing which sūrahs I recited. I feel no emotion during prayer It's so bad to the point that my mind wanders when I'm driving and when people are talking to me. How can I fix my poor memory, become less distracted and obtain khusu'?
Summary:
1. Do not pay attention to doubts. 2. Shorten the prayer with excellence. 3. Remember the greatness of Allah and that you are standing before Him. 4. Keep up with adhkār. 5. Regulate your sleep and nutrition. 6. Call upon Allah sincerely to improve your heart and memory. I ask Allah to fill your heart with īmān, to make your prayer a source of comfort, to repel the whispers of Shayṭān, and to grant you khushūʿ and tranquility.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may Peace and Blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
What you mentioned, dear brother, is among the matters that many people are tested with, especially those who seek goodness and are keen on obeying Allah. They are afflicted with whispers, distractions in prayer, lack of khushūʿ, frequent forgetfulness, and sometimes the matter extends into daily life, as you mentioned with distraction while driving or during conversations.
The correct treatment for this, as the people of Sunnah and the Jamaʿah have guided, is not by giving in to the whispers, nor through despair or hopelessness, but by combining correct worship, sound belief, adherence to the Sunnah, and taking the means to improve one’s soul, body, and mind.
First: Understand the root of the problem
What you are experiencing, by Allah’s permission, is not a sign of weak faith or lack of love for obedience. Rather, it could be a sign of your sincerity in seeking khushūʿ, but Shayṭān wants to ruin your prayer through various ways, such as:
- Whispers about intention, recitation, or actions.
- Distracting the mind with worldly thoughts.
- Making you feel your worship is invalid or worthless.
From the Sunnah:
- Ṣaḥīḥ al‑Bukhārī: 3276, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 134aNarrated by Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Satan comes to one of you and says, 'Who created so-and-so? 'till he says, 'Who has created your Lord?' So, when he inspires such a question, one should seek refuge with Allah and give up such thoughts."
From the Scholars:
- Ibn Taymiyyah, Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (22/608)
“It was said to some of the Salaf: ‘The Jews and Christians say: we do not experience whisperings.’ He replied: ‘They have spoken the truth! What would Shayṭān do with a ruined house?’”
Meaning, Shayṭān does not whisper to someone whose heart is already ruined from faith and obedience, like the state of the disbelievers, for he already dominates them and has no need to whisper to them.
Second: Treating waswasah and mental distraction in prayer 1. Ignoring whispers One of the greatest pieces of advice from the Salaf regarding waswasah is to hold onto certainty, leave doubt, and not pay attention to it.
From the Sunnah:
- Sahih Muslim 571aNarrated by Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When any one of you is in doubt about his prayer and he does Dot know how much he has prayed, three or four (rak'ahs). he should cast aside his doubt and base his prayer on what he is sure of. then perform two prostrations before giving salutations. If he has prayed five rak'ahs, they will make his prayer an even number for him, and if he has prayed exactly four, they will be humiliation for the devil.
the principle is: Do not repeat prayer due to doubt. Do not stop making duʿāʾ due to forgetfulness. Do not prolong the tashahhud due to waswasah.
2. Shortening hope and remembering you are standing before Allah Always remember you are standing before the One to whom nothing is hidden, and you may not live to pray the next prayer. So let your heart be present, your tongue humble, and your body submissive. Ibn al-Qayyim said, may Allah have mercy on him: "Khushūʿ in prayer is the presence of the heart before Allah, the humility of the limbs, the brokenness of the soul, and the submission of the body." 3. Striving against the self Prayer is worship, and worship requires striving. Do not wait for khushūʿ to come without patience.
From the Qur'an:
- al-ʿAnkabūt: 69
"As for those who struggle in Our cause, We will surely guide them along Our Way. And Allah is certainly with the good-doers."
4. Shortening the prayer with excellence The Sunnah is for the prayer to be with khushūʿ without such length that leads to distraction. Recite short sūrahs, reflect upon them, and do not lengthen duʿāʾ in places where it is not recommended. 5. Seeking refuge when whispers occur
From the Sunnah:
- Sahih Muslim 2203aNarrated by ʿUthmān ibn Abī al‑ʿĀṣ
Allah's Messenger, the Satan intervenes between me and my prayer and my reciting of the Qur'an and he confounds me. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:, That is (the doing of a) Satan (devil) who is known as Khinzab, and when you perceive its effect, seek refuge with Allah from it and spit three times to your left. I did that and Allah dispelled that from me.
Third: Treating weak memory and general distraction Among the important causes: 1. Lack of dhikr: Allah says:
From the Qur'an:
- al-Zukhruf: 36
And whoever turns a blind eye to the Reminder of the Most Compassionate, We place at the disposal of each a devilish one as their close associate,
2. Being overly occupied with the worldly life: This weakens focus and overwhelms the heart. 3. Too little or too much sleep, poor nutrition, and technological distractions (phones, internet). Among the beneficial treatments: • Consistency with morning and evening adhkār. • Reading a portion of the Qurʾān daily with reflection. • Reducing stimulants and distractions. • Doing some form of physical exercise. • Regulating sleep and rest. • Supplicating and turning to Allah sincerely. Some of the best supplications: "Allāhumma aʿinnī ʿalā dhikrika wa shukrika wa ḥusni ʿibādatik." "O Allah, help me to remember You, thank You, and worship You properly." "Allāhumma lā tajʿalnī min al-ghāfilīn." "O Allah, do not make me among the heedless." "Rabbi ishraḥ lī ṣadrī wa yassir lī amrī." "My Lord, expand my chest and make my task easy." Finally: Do not despair and do not stop You may feel you are not progressing or that your worship is lifeless, but know that your mere persistence in praying despite the whispers is a great struggle, and you are rewarded for it. Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "When the servant turns to Allah with his heart and is sincere in seeking Him, Allah assists him and makes his affairs easy."
And Allah knows best.
