Is It Permissible for a Woman to Wear a Printed or Patterned Hijab?
Question: Are printed hijabs permitted in Islam?
Summary:
It is not permissible for a woman to wear a hijab that contains adornments, patterns, or designs that attract attention, because the hijab was prescribed for covering and modesty, not for displaying adornment. Among the conditions of the proper Islamic hijab mentioned by the scholars is that the hijab itself should not be an adornment and that it should be free from anything that may cause temptation. Therefore, the hijab should be plain, covering, and free from decorations and prints that attract attention.
Answer:
Allah Almighty says:
From the Qur'an:
- [An-Nur: 31]
"and not expose their adornment"
From the Qur'an:
- [Al-Ahzab: 59]
"to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments"
These two verses indicate that a woman’s clothing in the presence of non-mahram men should be covering and free from attention-drawing adornment.
From the Scholars:
- Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him) said, when explaining the obligatory hijab for women:
“A woman is required to observe hijab from men and to cover her face and the rest of her body from those who are not her mahrams.”
- The scholars also mention among the conditions of hijab:
“The hijab itself should not be an adornment.”
Conclusion: It is not permissible for a woman to wear a hijab that contains adornments, patterns, or designs that attract attention, because the hijab was prescribed for covering and modesty, not for displaying adornment. Allah Almighty says: “And not expose their adornment.” [An-Nur: 31] Among the conditions of the proper Islamic hijab mentioned by the scholars is that the hijab itself should not be an adornment and that it should be covering and free from anything that may cause temptation. Therefore, a hijab containing decorations or attention-drawing prints conflicts with the purpose of hijab in Islamic law. A woman should choose a plain and covering hijab in order to uphold modesty, comply with the command of Allah Almighty, and block the means that may lead to temptation.
And Allah knows best.

Marrying a Woman Who Wears the Hijab but Not the Niqab
Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. I have been actively searching for a righteous wife who adheres to the complete Islamic dress code, including the niqab, for about six months to a year. Despite my sincere efforts, I have found it difficult to find such a woman. I am physically and financially capable of marriage, praise be to Allah. Is it permissible for me to marry a woman who wears the jilbab and hijab only that is, modest clothing without the niqab if I cannot find one who wears the niqab?
