Listening to the Qur’an While Doing Housework
Question: Is it permissible for me to listen to the Qur’an while doing household chores, or is that considered disrespectful to the Words of Allah?
Summary:
It is permissible to listen to the Qur’an while doing housework, as long as there is no heedlessness or disrespect, and the heart carries reverence and a sincere intention. The more the heart is present, the greater the reward by Allah’s permission.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Your question reflects your concern for honoring and respecting the Words of Allah and that is a noble trait that Allah loves.
The answer requires a simple clarification:
Yes, it is permissible to listen to the Qur’an while doing housework
As long as your heart is present to the best of your ability, and you are not overcome with heedlessness or distracted in a way that removes the reverence of the Qur’an.
From the Qur'an:
- Surah al-A‘rāf 7:204
Allah says: “So listen to it and remain silent that you may receive mercy.”
According to the majority of scholars of tafsir, this verse refers to listening during prayer or when the imam is reciting not in all situations. As for listening outside of prayer, it is among the best acts of worship, and a person is rewarded according to how present their heart is and how much they magnify the Words of Allah.
When is listening recommended? And when is it disliked or prohibited? 1. If you’re doing light tasks, like washing dishes or organizing the home, while maintaining a sense of respect and reflection even partially: This is permissible, and even recommended, because you are combining acts of worship with productive work. 2. If the work is extremely distracting (like loud noise, conversation, watching shows, or being on the phone, etc.): It is disliked to listen in this case, because it leads to heedlessness toward the Qur’an. Allah says: “And when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention…” 3. If you listen to the Qur’an just as background sound or out of formality, with no attention or reverence: This is not allowed, and may be considered disrespectful to the Qur’an, possibly entering into the category of “playing with the Qur’an” and we seek refuge in Allah from that. Practical advice: • Have a sincere intention in listening such as seeking reward, increasing faith, or attaching the heart to Allah’s words. • When hearing verses of warning, mercy, or advice try to pause or reflect, even briefly. • Don’t treat the Qur’an like background music. Separate it from other audio and give it its proper space.
From the Scholars:
- Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymeen (رحمه الله) was asked: “Some people listen to the Qur’an before sleeping, or during studying or while busy is that respectful, and what is the ruling?”
He replied: “This is not from proper etiquette. It is not proper etiquette to play the Book of Allah even from a cassette while you are heedless of it. Allah said: (So when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it and be silent…) [Surah al-Aʿrāf: 204]. So we say: If you are free to listen, then listen. But if you are busy, don’t turn it on… Some people say: I can only sleep while listening to the Qur’an. If that’s the case, then it’s fine as long as he is lying down waiting for sleep and is not busy. Whoever seeks help by listening to the Words of Allah for a permissible purpose there is no harm.” End quote from Liqa’ al-Bab al-Maftooh (Meeting #146, Q14).
And Allah knows best.
