What Is the Ruling on Jumu'ah When Eid and Jumu'ah Fall on the Same Day, and Is It Better to Attend?

Question: Asalamualaikum Wa rahmatulAllah Wa Barakatuh,What is the Rulling on Friday prayer when Eid and Friday are on the same day, should a person attended Friday prayer or not, is it better to attended or not? JazakumAllah khair

Summary:

If Eid and Jumuah fall on the same day, then whoever attends the Eid prayer is granted a concession to leave Jumuah prayer and instead pray Dhuhr in its place. As for the imam and those who attend the mosque, Jumuah is still established for them. However, it is better and more complete for a Muslim to attend Jumuah, so as to avoid the scholarly disagreement and out of eagerness to perform this great act of worship.

Answer:

It is authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ that he granted a concession to those who attended the Eid prayer to leave Jumuah when the two occur on the same day.

From the Sunnah:

  • Sahih Abi DawudZayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ prayed Eid and then granted a concession regarding Jumuah, saying:
"Whoever wishes to pray may pray."
  • Sahih Abi DawudAbu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Two Eids have come together on this day of yours. Whoever wishes, the Eid prayer suffices him from Jumuah, but we will be holding Jumuah."

These two hadiths indicate that whoever attends the Eid prayer may leave Jumuah. However, prayer is not waived entirely from him. Rather, he must pray Dhuhr at its proper time. • As for the one who did not attend the Eid prayer, he remains obligated to attend Jumuah and is not included in this concession. As for the imam and those who attend the mosque, they establish Jumuah, because the Prophet ﷺ said: "But we will be holding Jumuah." Meaning: we will establish Jumuah for those who wish to attend it. This understanding has also been authentically reported from a number of the Companions, including Uthman bin Affan, Abdullah bin al-Zubayr, and Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with them). What Is Better? The better course for a Muslim is to attend Jumuah prayer if he is able to do so, because this combines both virtues, avoids the scholarly disagreement, and demonstrates eagerness to attend this great act of worship. However, if a person attended the Eid prayer and then took advantage of the legislated concession by leaving Jumuah and praying Dhuhr instead, there is no blame upon him, if Allah wills. Final Answer: • If Eid and Jumuah fall on the same day: • Whoever attends the Eid prayer may leave Jumuah and pray Dhuhr instead. • Whoever does not attend the Eid prayer remains obligated to attend Jumuah. • The imam and those with him should establish Jumuah prayer and not abandon it. • What is better and more complete for the one who is able is to attend Jumuah after Eid, following the example of the Prophet ﷺ, seeking the reward, and avoiding the scholarly disagreement.

And Allah knows best.
