Woman Traveling for Hajj or Umrah Without a Mahram
Question: Is it permissible for a woman to perform Hajj or Umrah by herself?
Summary:
It is not permissible for a woman to travel for Hajj or Umrah alone without a mahram. Most scholars require the presence of a mahram for any travel. They rely on explicit, authentic hadiths that prohibit a woman from traveling without a mahram. If a woman performs Hajj or Umrah without a mahram, her Hajj is valid, but she is sinful for disobeying the prohibition. Some scholars allowed traveling for the obligatory Hajj only and only if there is trustworthy company but the correct and stronger view (the view of the majority of the early scholars) is that travel is not permissible except with a mahram.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may Peace and Blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
Many authentic narrations, agreed upon in meaning, prohibit a woman from traveling without a mahram. Among them:
From the Sunnah:
- [Al- Bukhari and Muslim].Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
No woman should travel except in company of a (Mahram).
- Sahih al-Bukhari 1088Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said,
"It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel for one day and night except with a Mahram."
The variation in narrations regarding the distance shows that the reason for the ruling is travel itself, not the length of the journey.
From the Scholars:
- 1. The Majority (Mālikīs, Shāfiʿīs, Ḥanbalīs, and Ẓāhirīs)
They hold that: A mahram is required for any travel by a woman. She may not perform Hajj or ʿUmrah alone, even if travel conditions are safe. This is the stronger and correct view because of the general, unrestricted texts and the absence of any specific exception for Hajj.
- 2. Abū Ḥanīfa and some Shāfiʿīs
They allowed only the obligatory Hajj, under strict conditions: Presence of trustworthy companions Or travel with a reliable group of women Or a completely safe route They do not allow supererogatory Hajj or ʿUmrah without a mahram. However, the preferred opinion as stated by Ibn al-Munḏir, al-Nawawī, Ibn Ḥajar, Ibn Bāz, and Ibn ʿUthaymīn is that the authentic hadiths prohibit all travel without a mahram.
Wisdom Behind Requiring a Mahram The Sharīʿah came to protect the woman and preserve her dignity. Among the wisdoms: 1. Preventing harm from reaching her 2. Preventing temptation (fitnah) and unlawful mixing 3. Protecting her rights and ensuring proper support during travel 4. Considering her natural physical vulnerability to potential dangers This wisdom remains applicable in every time and place, regardless of modern travel methods.
Is Her Hajj Valid if She Travels Without a Mahram? Yes, her Hajj is valid if she performs the rituals properly, because having a mahram is not a condition for the validity of Hajj, but a condition for the permissibility of travel. However: - She is sinful for violating the prohibition - She is rewarded for the act of Hajj itself if performed correctly. * It is not permissible for a woman to travel for Hajj or ʿUmrah without a mahram. This is the stronger opinion and is supported by the textual evidence. If she does so, her Hajj is valid, but she has committed a sin by traveling without a mahram.
And Allah knows best.
