Approaching a Girl for Marriage the Right Way

Question: If you find a girl you want to marry, how can you approach her in a halal way? Is it allowed to speak to her and ask her to give your phone number to her father?

Summary:

Yes, it is allowed to ask her to give your number to her father with the intention of proposing, if there’s no other option, but it must follow Islamic guidelines modesty, seriousness, and keeping it short. However, the better path is always the formal and direct method through her guardian or a trusted intermediary.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Your question is important and shows your concern for following the Islamic path in such sensitive matters.

From the Sunnah:

  • Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 5090, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1446aNarrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him):
"The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "A woman is married for four things, i.e., her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion. So you should marry the religious woman (otherwise) you will be a losers."

There is no harm in Islam if a man desires to marry a specific girl due to her religion and character this is actually encouraged in Shari’ah as mentioned in the authentic hadith

Interaction between a man and a non-mahram woman is generally not allowed unless for a valid reason such as marriage and even then, it must follow proper Islamic guidelines, without seclusion or flirtatious speech. Permissible methods of approach: • Directly proposing through her guardian: This is the best and most complete method if you know her father or guardian, contact him directly and express your intention to propose. • Finding a trustworthy intermediary (a male relative of hers, or a reliable woman): to inform her or her family of your interest. This method is more discreet, respectful, and increases the chances of acceptance. • Asking her to give your number to her guardian: If no other option is available, it is acceptable to politely and modestly speak to her without flirtation, saying something like: "Dear sister, please let your father know that I wish to formally propose. If he agrees, he can contact me at this number." As long as: • The conversation is limited to what is necessary. • Communication is not repeated. • The speech is free from emotional or affectionate language. • The interaction ends after conveying the message. This approach is only allowed in cases of necessity and should be done with caution and modesty. What is not allowed: • Entering into a relationship or long conversations “to get to know each other.” • Exchanging pictures or joking. • Private meetings or seclusion without a mahram. • Delaying marriage just for the sake of getting to know one another.

And Allah knows best.
