Is It Permissible to Pray Tahiyyat al-Masjid Before Maghrib Adhan?

Question: Is it permissible to pray Tahiyyat al-Masjid (the greeting of the mosque) before the Maghrib adhan, or is this time considered one of the disliked times for prayer? May Allah reward you with goodness.

Summary:

It is permissible for a Muslim to perform Tahiyyat al-Masjid before the Maghrib adhan, and there is no harm in doing so. In fact, it is recommended.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may Peace and Blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)

Tahiyyat al-Masjid:

It is two rak‘ahs that a Muslim prays upon entering the mosque before sitting, based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:

From the Sunnah:

  • Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 444, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 714Narrated by Abū Qatādah (رضي الله عنه):
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If anyone of you enters a mosque, he should pray two rak`at before sitting."

Disliked times: There are times during which prayer is discouraged. They are three: 1. When the sun rises until it fully rises, 2. When the sun is at its zenith (the short period just before Dhuhr) 3. When the sun is setting. Prayers with specific reasons: Tahiyyat al-Masjid is considered among the prayers that have specific reasons, meaning it is linked to a particular cause, which is entering the mosque. The basic ruling is that such prayers are not prohibited during disliked times.

And Allah knows best.
