What Happens If a Woman Enters Paradise while her Husband is in Hell?

Question: If a woman's husband is in Hellfire while she is in Paradise, then what will happen to her? Will she have male ḥūr al-ʿayn? Also, if her husband enters Paradise after having been punished in Hellfire for many years, will he return to her or not? Please answer with evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah, and from the statements of the Salaf or the scholars.

Summary:

If her husband was a believer but his entry into Paradise was delayed because of punishment that purified him from his sins, then she will wait for him, and Allah will reunite them in Paradise after he has been purified from his sins, because the people of faith will be gathered together in Paradise after the Reckoning.

Answer:

By Allah's permission, the answer is as follows, with evidence from the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the statements of the Salaf and scholars.

First: A General Principle Regarding the Bliss of the People of Paradise, Allah, The Exalted, says,

From the Qur'an:

  • [Sūrat Fuṣṣilat 41:31]
“And therein is whatever your souls desire, and therein is whatever you request.”
  • [Sūrat al-Zukhruf 43:71]
“Therein is whatever the souls desire and that which delights the eyes, and you will abide therein forever.”
  • [Sūrat al-Ḥijr 15:47]
“And We shall remove whatever resentment is in their breasts; they will be brothers upon thrones, facing one another.”

Meaning, everyone who enters Paradise, whether male or female, will attain complete happiness and perfect contentment. No envy, pain, or sorrow will remain in their hearts. Rather, they will be in the most perfect state and the most delightful bliss. This is a foundational principle upon which the answer must be built. Second: The Condition of a Woman if She Enters Paradise While Her Husband Is in Hellfire: If Her Husband Was a Disbeliever (Kufr That Expels One from Islam) Then he will not be with her in Paradise,

From the Qur'an:

  • [Sūrat al-Shūrā 42:7]
“A party will be in Paradise and a party will be in the Blaze.”

Allah, Glorified and Exalted, also says regarding the wives of the disbelievers:

From the Qur'an:

  • [Sūrat al-Taḥrīm 66:10]
“Allah presents an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Nūḥ and the wife of Lūṭ. They were under two of Our righteous servants, but they betrayed them, and those husbands availed them nothing against Allah.”

Just as a disbelieving woman will not enter Paradise with her believing husband, likewise a believing woman will not be with her disbelieving husband. However, Allah will grant her in Paradise a husband better than him,

From the Qur'an:

  • [Sūrat al-Baqarah 2:25]
“And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein forever.”

From the Scholars:

  • Ibn Kathīr (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Meaning: purified from impurities, blameworthy characteristics, and every defect and deficiency; and the believing women will be married to husbands from the people of Paradise.” (Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, 1/247)
  • Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“A woman in Paradise will be given a husband who brings comfort to her eyes, whether it is her husband from this world or someone else. If she had no husband in this world, or her husband is in Hellfire, Allah will marry her to whatever pleases her.”

    (Ḥādī al-Arwāḥ, p. 68)

Therefore, there is no deprivation in Paradise. Rather, Allah will replace him with someone better: a husband from the people of Paradise who is suitable for her rank and station. Third: Will a Woman Have Male Ḥūr al-ʿAyn? No. There is nothing in the Book of Allah or in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ indicating that women will have “male ḥūr al-ʿayn.” Rather, this description is mentioned for men only. However, there is evidence that every woman in Paradise will have whatever her soul desires.

From the Qur'an:

  • [Sūrat Fuṣṣilat 41:31]
“And therein is whatever your souls desire.”

If a woman desires a husband of excellent character and appearance, Allah will grant her that, whether it is her husband from this world or someone better than him.

From the Scholars:

  • Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“A woman in Paradise will be with her husband if he is among the people of Paradise. If not, then Allah will marry her to a man from the people of Paradise who will bring comfort to her eyes. A woman in Paradise will attain whatever she desires, but we have no evidence for the existence of male ḥūr as there are female ḥūr for men.” (Sharḥ al-ʿAqīdah al-Wāsiṭiyyah, Chapter on the Bliss of Paradise)
  • Shaykh Ibn Bāz (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Women in Paradise will have whatever they desire just as men will. However, it has not been reported that they will have male ḥūr. Rather, they will be married to righteous believing men.” (Fatāwā Nūr ʿalā al-Darb)

Fourth: If Her Husband Was a Believer and Entered Hellfire First, Then Allah Brought Him Out If her husband was a Muslim but committed major sins, and he was punished in Hellfire for a period before Allah admitted him into Paradise, then his believing wife will return to him in Paradise.

From the Qur'an:

  • [Sūrat al-Zukhruf 43:70]
“Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, rejoicing.”
  • [Sūrat Ghāfir 40:8]
“Our Lord, admit them into Gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them, and whoever was righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their descendants.”

From the Scholars:

  • Ibn Kathīr (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Meaning: Allah will unite them with their spouses and relatives in Paradise.” (Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, 7/139)
  • Shaykh al-Saʿdī (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“What is meant by spouses here are believing wives. Allah will reunite spouses after they enter Paradise.” (Tafsīr al-Saʿdī, p. 707)

And Allah knows best.
