The Woman Whose Husband Is in Hell While She Is in Paradise
Question: if a woman’s husband is in Hell while she is in Paradise, what will she have? Will she have male hur al-ʿayn? Also, if her husband enters Paradise after being punished in Hell for many years, will he return to her or not? Please provide the answer with evidence from the Qur’an, Sunnah, and statements of the Salaf or scholars.
Summary:
If her husband was a believer but delayed entering Paradise due to punishment for his sins, she will wait for him, and Allah will reunite them in Paradise after he is purified from his sins, for the people of faith will be gathered together after judgment in Paradise.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may Peace and Blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
Allah, the Exalted, promised the people of Paradise complete bliss and perfect contentment. He said:
From the Qur'an:
- Fussilat: 31
"We are your supporters in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. There you will have whatever your souls desire, and there you will have whatever you ask for"
- al-Zukhruf: 71
"Golden trays and cups will be passed around to them. There will be whatever the souls desire and the eyes delight in. And you will be there forever."
- al-Hijr: 47
"We will remove whatever bitterness they had in their hearts. In a friendly manner, they will be on thrones, facing one another."
Whoever enters Paradise, whether man or woman, attains complete happiness and satisfaction. No envy, pain, or sadness will remain in their hearts, and they will be in the highest state of joy and bliss. This principle must be the foundation upon which the answer is based.
The state of the woman if she enters Paradise and her husband is in Hell: 1. If her husband was a disbeliever (disbelief that removes one from Islam): He will not be with her in Paradise, for Allah the Exalted said:
From the Qur'an:
- al-Shura: 7
"...a group will be in Paradise and another in the Blaze."
- al-Tahrim: 10
"Allah sets forth an example for the disbelievers: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. Each was married to one of Our righteous servants, yet betrayed them. So their husbands were of no benefit to them against Allah whatsoever. Both were told, “Enter the Fire, along with the others!”"
However: Allah will give her in Paradise a husband better than him, as He said:
- al-Baqarah: 25
"...They will have pure spouses, and they will be there forever."
From the Scholars:
- Tafsir Ibn Kathir 1/247
Ibn Kathir رحمه الله said: “Meaning, purified from impurities and bad traits, from every defect and shortcoming. The believing women will be married to husbands from among the people of Paradise.”
- Hadi al-Arwah, p. 68
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “The woman in Paradise will be given a husband who delights her eyes, whether it was her husband in the world or someone else. If she had no husband in the world, or if her husband is in Hell, Allah will marry her to one who pleases her.”
Therefore, there is no deprivation in Paradise. Allah will replace her husband with one better than him, a husband from among the people of Paradise suited to her status.
Will women have male hur al-ʿayn? No, there is no mention in the Qur’an or the authentic Sunnah of any “male hur al-ʿayn” for women. The description of hur al-ʿayn is mentioned only for men. However, what is established is that every woman in Paradise will have whatever her soul desires:
From the Qur'an:
- Fussilat: 31
"...There you will have whatever your souls desire, and there you will have whatever you ask for."
So, if the woman desires a husband of good appearance and character, Allah will grant her that whether it was her husband from the world or another who is better.
From the Scholars:
- Sharh al-ʿAqidah al-Wasitiyyah, section on the bliss of Paradise
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymeen رحمه الله said: “The woman in Paradise will be with her husband if he is among the people of Paradise, and if he is not, then Allah will marry her to a man from the people of Paradise who will delight her eyes. The woman in Paradise will have whatever she desires, but there is no evidence that there are male hur al-ʿayn as there are for men.”
- Fatawa Nur ʿala al-Darb
Shaykh Ibn Baz رحمه الله said: “The women in Paradise will have whatever they desire just as men do, but it has not been mentioned that they will have male hur al-ʿayn. Rather, they will be married to righteous believing men.”
If her husband was a believer but first entered Hell and was later admitted to Paradise? If her husband was a Muslim who committed major sins and was punished in Hell for a time, then Allah later admitted him to Paradise, Then his believing wife will return to him in Paradise, for Allah said:
From the Qur'an:
- al-Zukhruf: 70
"Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, rejoicing.”
- Ghafir: 8
"...Admit them into the Gardens of Eternity which You have promised them, along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants..."
From the Scholars:
- Tafsir Ibn Kathir 7/139
Ibn Kathir رحمه الله said: “Meaning, Allah will reunite them with their spouses and relatives in Paradise.”
- Tafsir al-Saʿdi, p. 707
Shaykh al-Saʿdi رحمه الله said: “What is meant by ‘their spouses’ here are their believing wives, so Allah will reunite spouses after they enter Paradise.”
And Allah knows best.
