Is Wudu Valid with Sunscreen on the Skin?
Question: Salam wa alakium, is it valid to make wudo over sunscreen? There are two kinds; chemical sunscreen (which your skin absorbs) and mineral sunscreen (which stays ontop of your skin to protect it from UV rays) JazakAllahu khairun
Summary:
If the sunscreen does not prevent water from reaching the skin (such as light creams that are absorbed), then the wuḍū’ is valid. As for if it forms a barrier that prevents water from reaching (such as some thick mineral sunscreens), then it must be removed before wuḍū’.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may Peace and Blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
From the Qur'an:
- [Al-Mā’idah: 6]
Your faces and your hands.
This indicates the obligation of washing the limbs, and washing is not achieved except by water reaching the skin.
From the Sunnah:
- Bukhari and MuslimThe Prophet ﷺ said:
وَيْلٌ لِلْأَعْقَابِ مِنَ النَّارِ
This contains a warning against leaving even a small part not reached by water, indicating the obligation of thoroughly covering the limb with water.
From the Scholars:
- Imam al-Nawawī رحمه الله said:
“If there is on some of his limbs wax, solid grease, or mud that prevents water from reaching, his purification is not valid.” Ibn Qudāmah رحمه الله said: “If there is on some of his limbs something that prevents water from reaching it, his wuḍū’ is not valid.”
Chemical sunscreen: • It is usually absorbed into the skin • It does not form a barrier • Ruling: It does not affect the validity of wuḍū’ Mineral (physical) sunscreen: • It remains on the surface of the skin • Sometimes forms a visible layer (like zinc or titanium) • If it is light and does not prevent water, wuḍū’ is valid • If it prevents water from reaching, it must be removed Everything on the limbs of wuḍū’ is divided into: • That which prevents water from reaching → must be removed • That which does not prevent water from reaching → does not harm • If the sunscreen does not block water from the skin → your wuḍū’ is valid • If it forms a barrier → wuḍū’ is not valid until it is removed • The consideration is not only its type (chemical or mineral), but whether it actually prevents water or not.
And Allah knows best.
