Advice for Young Muslims Seeking Islamic Knowledge While Pursuing College and Business?
Question: What advice would you give to a young man who is sixteen years old, striving to seek Islamic knowledge and memorize the Qur’an, while at the same time studying in college and considering work or business?
Summary:
My advice to this young man is to begin by correcting his intention and making the pursuit of Islamic knowledge and the memorization of the Qur’an the foundation of his life. He should organize his time in a manner that allows him to combine his studies and permissible work without neglecting his religious obligations or abandoning the path of knowledge. Combining these matters is possible and beneficial, provided that he gives priority to what is most important, remains patient, perseveres, and asks Allah for success and steadfastness.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
First: The Virtue of Youth and the Beginning of the Journey
Reaching the age of sixteen is a tremendous blessing. It is a stage of life marked by strong memory, quick understanding, and clarity of mind. The righteous predecessors took advantage of this period in seeking knowledge.
From the Sunnah:
- Shu’ab al-Imān lil-Bayhaqī 10250Ibn Abbas reported The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“Take advantage of five before five: 1- Your youth before your old age..."
From the Scholars:
- Imam Al-Shafi'i (May Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Knowledge is that which benefits, not merely that which is memorized.”
He himself sought knowledge from a young age, and Allah opened many doors of goodness for him.
Second: The Qur’an Is the Foundation The greatest thing with which a student of knowledge should begin is the Book of Allah, through memorization, recitation, and reflection upon its meanings.
From the Qur'an:
- [Sūrat Ṣād 38:29]
"[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], that they might reflect upon its verses"
From the Salaf:
- ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“If your hearts were purified, they would never have enough of the Speech of Allah.”
Therefore, my advice is: - Establish a daily portion of Qur’an, even if it is small. - Do not abandon memorization because of studies or work, for a small deed that is consistent is better than a large deed that is discontinued. Third: Seeking Knowledge Should Be Gradual Do not begin with advanced works before mastering the foundations, and do not branch out into many subjects before establishing a strong base.
From the Salaf:
- Muhammad ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Indeed, this knowledge is religion, so look carefully at whom you take your religion from.”
Begin with: - Correct Islamic creed (‘aqidah). - Concise works of fiqh. - Learning Arabic to the extent needed. - Keeping company with the people of knowledge and attending their lessons. Do not constantly move from one book to another without a structured methodology. Fourth: Combining Studies and Work Formal education, as well as considering employment or business, is permissible and can even be beneficial, provided that: - The income is lawful. - It does not cause one to neglect the prayer. - It does not prevent one from seeking knowledge.
From the Qur'an:
- [Sūrat al-Mulk 67:15]
"-So walk about in its regions and eat from His provisions."
Many of the Salaf would: - Learn - Work - Seek knowledge All at the same time. However, be careful that work does not consume your heart and all of your time, causing you to lose what is greater and more valuable. Fifth: Time Management Is the Key to Success Among the greatest causes of failure are: - Procrastination. - Poor management of time.
From the Salaf:
- Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“O son of Adam, you are but a collection of days. Whenever a day passes, a part of you has passed away.”
Practical Advice: - Divide your day into portions: Qur’an, Islamic knowledge, studies, and rest - Beware of wasting hours on matters that bring no benefit. Reduce distractions as much as possible Sixth: Beware of Haste and Despair Do not expect immediate results, and do not compare yourself to others.
From the Sunnah:
- Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported, (Authenticated by Shaykh Al-Albani)The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Verily, knowledge only comes by learning and forbearance only comes by cultivating forbearance. Whoever aims for good will receive goodness and whoever seeks to evade evil will be protected from it.”
The path is long, but it is a blessed path for the one who is sincere. Final Summary: - Begin with the Qur’an and never abandon it. - Seek knowledge according to a sound methodology and in a gradual manner. - Combine studies and work without neglecting your religion. - Organize your time and guard your heart. - Remain constant in supplication, for success comes from Allah alone. We ask Allah to open the doors of goodness for you, make you among the people of the Qur’an and among the sincere seekers of knowledge, and bless you in your youth and throughout your life.
And Allah knows best.
