Is Henna Permissible for Women, Does It Affect Wudu, and May It Be Shown to Non-Mahram Men?
Question: is henna allowed for girls? (is wudo valid over it? is it allowed infront of non mahrams?)
Summary:
Henna is permissible for women. In fact, it may be recommended when used as adornment for one's husband or when it is part of the customary practices of women. Wudu is valid with henna present if only its color or stain remains, because it does not prevent water from reaching the skin. As for displaying henna before non-mahram men, this is not permissible when it is worn as adornment, because a woman is commanded to conceal her adornment from those who are not her mahrams.
Answer:
- The basic principle regarding henna is that it is permissible. Women during the time of the Prophet ﷺ used henna, and there are hadiths and narrations indicating the legitimacy of women dyeing their hands and feet with henna.
The scholars have explicitly stated that henna is among the permissible forms of adornment for women. Rather, it is one of the well-known forms of adornment that Muslim women have practiced throughout the past and present.
- As for Wudu` with henna present:
If the henna is merely a color or stain remaining on the skin after it has been washed, then wudu is valid without any significant scholarly disagreement, because the water reaches the skin.
However, if there remains on the skin a substance or layer that prevents water from reaching the skin, then it must be removed before performing wudu, because one of the conditions for the validity of wudu is that water reaches the limb that is to be washed.
Ordinary henna does not prevent water from reaching the skin. Rather, it only leaves a color and a stain upon the skin.
- As for displaying henna before non-mahram men:
It is not permissible for a woman to display her adornment before non-mahram men,
due to the statement of Allah, the Exalted:
From the Qur'an:
- [Surah al-Nur 24:31]
"And not display their adornment except to their husbands..."
Meaning: they should not display the places of adornment or the forms of beautification customarily used before non-mahram men. Henna is a visible adornment on the hands or feet. Therefore, if it is noticeable and intended as beautification, it is not permissible to display it before non-mahram men. Rather, it must be concealed from them. Likewise, a woman must avoid everything that may become a cause of temptation or draw attention to her, including displaying adornment, jewelry, designs, and decorative patterns before non-mahram men. Final Answer: • Henna is permissible for women and is among the well-known forms of adornment used by women. • Wudu is valid with henna present if it is merely a color or stain that does not prevent water from reaching the skin. • If there is a layer that prevents water from reaching the skin, it must be removed before performing wudu. • It is not permissible for a woman to display henna and other forms of adornment before non-mahram men. Rather, she must conceal her adornment from non-mahrams in obedience to the command of Allah, the Exalted.
And Allah knows best.
