What Is the Ruling on Working in Restaurants or Stores That Sell Pork, Alcohol, or Other Haram Products?

Question: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, Shaykh. May Allah preserve you and grant you success. What is the ruling on working in places such as Tim Hortons or McDonald’s where they sell pork and other haram foods? And what is the ruling on working in grocery stores that sell pork, alcohol, or other haram products? Does the ruling differ depending on whether the worker is directly handling, preparing, or selling those haram items, or if they are simply working in another department or position? Jazakallahu khayran.

Summary:

Working in stores like Walmart or FreshCo is permissible if the job involves only lawful products and does not assist in selling or handling forbidden items. However, if the work includes dealing with alcohol, pork, or other prohibited goods, it is not allowed according to the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the statements of the scholars.

Is It Obligatory to Work in My Father's Business Instead of Taking a Better-Paying Job?

Assalāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh. I am 15 years old and live with my parents. My father owns a sweet shop and wants me to work there for about 6 hours a day, 4 days a week. The work does not interfere with my prayers, my health, or my studies. My concern is that the pay is lower than what I could likely earn at another job. Is it obligatory for me to obey my father and work at his shop in this situation, or is this considered a personal matter where I may respectfully decline and seek work elsewhere? May Allah reward you.
