Does Water Splashing On Other Parts Of The Body During Wudu` Change It's Order?
Question: During wudu, if water splashes on other body part, does it change the order of wudu?
Summary:
Water splashing onto another body part during wudu does not affect the validity of the wudu nor the required order of its acts. The purpose of maintaining the prescribed order is to wash the limbs of wudu intentionally and in the manner commanded by Allah. As for water droplets or splashes that reach other limbs without the intention of washing them, they carry no significance in this regard.
Answer:
Allah the Exalted commanded that wudu be performed in a specific order, saying:
From the Qur'an:
- [Surah al-Maidah 5:6]
"O you who believe, when you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles."
• The scholars who hold that maintaining the prescribed order is obligatory say that the face must be washed first, then the hands, then the head is wiped, and then the feet are washed. • However, what is meant by washing here is the intentional washing performed by the person making wudu as part of fulfilling the act of purification, not water that happens to splash or scatter unintentionally. • Therefore, if a person is washing his face and water reaches his hands or feet, or if he is washing his hands and water splashes onto his head or feet, this is not considered a legislated washing of those limbs and does not affect the required order. • For this reason, it is not known from any of the scholars that they required a person to repeat his wudu or ruled that the prescribed order had been invalidated due to water splashing during wudu. This is because such splashing is difficult to avoid, and the Shariah is founded upon ease and the removal of hardship.
From the Qur'an:
- [Surah al-Hajj 22:78]
"And He has not placed upon you in the religion any hardship."
- [Surah al-Baqarah 2:185]
"Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship."
Indeed, if this matter were opened to scrutiny, it would lead to severe misgivings and obsessive doubts, since hardly anyone is free from water splashing onto some of his limbs while performing wudu. Final Answer: • Water splashing onto another limb during wudu does not affect the validity of the wudu. • It does not interrupt the required order between the limbs of wudu. • Consideration is given to the intentional washing performed by the person making wudu with the intention of washing a limb, not to water droplets or splashes that happen to reach it. • A Muslim should not pay attention to such misgivings. Rather, he should continue his wudu according to the Sunnah without unnecessary hardship or excessive strictness.
And Allah knows best.
