Is the Prayer of a Person Standing Alone in a Row Valid?

Question: السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته I have a question regarding a person praying alone in a row in Congregational Prayer. If a person from takbir to sujood prays alone, without anyone by his sides, is his prayer valid?. Also, if a person who is about to start a new row before joining the prayer sees that there is no one there to join him till he goes to sujood, should he wait until someone joins him to pray by his side or should he join the prayer by himself, starting a new row? جزاك الله خيرا

Summary:

The stronger opinion among the scholars is that if a person prays alone behind the row while being able to join the row, or he pulls someone back to stand with him, or waits for someone to stand beside him, then his prayer is invalid. This is based on the hadith of Ali ibn Shayban (may Allah be pleased with him), who reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Repeat your prayer, for there is no prayer for the one who prays alone behind the row.” (Authenticated in Sahih al-Jamiʿ) However, if he does not find a place in the row, is unable to enter it, cannot find anyone to stand with him, and fears missing the rakah or the congregation, then he may pray alone behind the row, and his prayer is valid according to a number of scholars, because Allah, the Exalted, says: "So fear Allah as much as you are able." (Surah at-Taghabun: 16)

Answer:

In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

From the Sunnah:

  • Sahih Abi DawudWabisah ibn Mabad al-Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man praying alone behind the row, so he ordered him to repeat the prayer.
  • In Sahih Ibn Majah,Ali ibn Shayban (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
"We set out until we came to the Prophet ﷺ and gave him our pledge. We prayed behind him, and he led another prayer. When he completed the prayer, he saw a man praying alone behind the row. The Prophet ﷺ stood over him and, when he finished, said: 'Repeat your prayer, for there is no prayer for the one who prays behind the row alone.'"

For this reason, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal and a group of the scholars of hadith held that the prayer of a person praying alone behind the row is invalid if he is able to stand in the row or form a row with someone else. As for the majority of the jurists, they considered the prayer valid though disliked. However, the stronger view is that of Imam Ahmad because of the strength and clarity of the hadiths. First: If a person prays alone behind the row from the opening takbir until prostration If he is able to enter the row, finds a gap in it, or is able to stand with another person, yet still prays alone, then according to the stronger view his prayer is invalid. However, if he does not find a gap, cannot reach the row, and there is no one to stand with him, then his prayer is valid because he has done what he is able to do, and Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Second: If a person comes to begin a new row If he believes it is likely that someone will enter the mosque shortly and stand with him without causing him to miss the rakah or experience significant hardship, then waiting is preferable. However, if he fears missing the rakah, or does not know whether anyone will come or not, then he should join the imam and not abandon the congregation. He should stand alone behind the row until someone comes to stand with him if someone does arrive. This detailed position was chosen by Ibn Taymiyyah and Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen. They stated that one who is unable to stand in the row is excused due to his inability, and obligations are waived when one is incapable of fulfilling them. Important Note: • It is not permissible to pull a person from the row in front back toward oneself, because the hadiths reported regarding this are not authentic, and because doing so causes the row to be split and removes a person from a superior position to an inferior one. • If the follower finds a gap in the row, he must fill it and is not permitted to stand alone behind the row. • If he does not find a gap in the row but is able to stand on the imam's right side, then he should stand beside the imam and not alone behind the row. • If he does not find a gap, is unable to stand beside the imam, and cannot find anyone to stand with him, then he should join the congregational prayer and not abandon it. He may pray alone behind the row because he is excused in that situation. • It is not permissible to abandon the congregation or wait until the prayer ends on the grounds that no one is available to stand with him. Rather, he should pray according to his ability,

From the Qur'an:

  • (Surah at-Taghabun: 16)
"So fear Allah as much as you are able."

Final Answer: If a person prays alone behind the row while being able to enter the row or stand with someone else, then the stronger view is that his prayer is invalid and must be repeated. However, if he does not find a place in the row, cannot find anyone to stand with him, and is unable to remove his state of praying alone, then he may pray behind the row by himself, and his prayer is valid because he is excused. The legal maxim states: "Obligations are waived due to inability." Allah, the Exalted, says: "So fear Allah as much as you are able." (at-Taghabun:16)

And Allah knows best.

I often doze off or drift into imagination. I cannot maintain dhikr for a long time without feeling bored or sleepy. Sometimes five minutes pass and I realize I was daydreaming the whole time. Can a Person Stop or Combine Prayers Due to Severe Depression?

I suffer from severe depression, and I have reached a stage where I feel that prayer causes me suicidal thoughts, and supplication brings me panic attacks. I do not say this out of belittling the religion, but because of the intensity of distress and psychological pain that I am in. Is it permissible for me in this situation to temporarily stop performing the prayer, or at least is it permissible for me to combine the prayers, such as combining them at the time of ʿAṣr or Maghrib, due to this severe psychological condition? Please advise, may Allah bless you.
